Sheep Diets

Our sheep feeds, in coarse or pellet form, provide excellent nutrition for the lactating ewe to the finishing lamb and recognises the change in requirements depending on the stage of production. Please note: all A.W. Ennis ewe feeds contain Magnesium as an aid to prevent hypomagnesaemia in the ewe. Ewe and lamb feeds should not be fed directly to lambs or to rams, as this can result in urinary calculi.

Feeding Guide

Ewe nutrition in late pregnancy is critical. 75% of lamb growth occurs last 6-8 weeks. This rapid growth of the lamb results in higher nutrient requirements of the ewe, but also decreased dry matter intake due to decreased rumen size as the lamb grows. Therefore, a high quality diet must be offered to ensure:

  • No excessive body condition loss

  • Good lamb birth weights

  • Good quality and quantity of colostrums

Sheep are particularly sensitive to forage quality. Poor fermentation, low dry matter and insufficient chop length can decrease intake by 30%.

Post lambing, it is recommended to feed 0.8 – 2 kg per ewe per day depending in forage or at grass. A coarse creep feeding should be introducedataround 3 weeks.

Please note: all A.W. Ennis ewe feeds contain Magnesium as an aid to prevent hypomagnesaemia (grass staggers/tetany) in the ewe. Ewe and lamb feeds should not be fed directly to lambs or to rams, as this can result in urinary calculi (stones in the renal tract).
